Grade 12: Participation in Government and Civics
This course aims to provide students with opportunities to become engaged in the political process by acquiring the knowledge and practicing the skills necessary for active citizenship. Content specifications are not included, so that the course can adapt to present local, national, and global circumstances, allowing teachers to select flexibly from current events to illuminate key ideas and conceptual understandings. Participation in government and in our communities is fundamental to the success of American democracy.
1. Save the amendment sheet I handed out yesterday and we will refer to that on Monday.
2. Good news - since I am out today, you may hand your essays in on Monday if you wish. If you hand it in today, I will give you some extra credit for being timely.
3. We have the laptop carts today, so you will use them.
4. Your task today is to research original news articles dealing with the incident in Waco Texas in early 1993, between the federal government and a group called The Branch Davidians. Stick to news sources from the major networks, as in:
ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, New York Times, Washington Post, Washington Times, Time Magazine, US News and World Report, Associated Press or PBS.
Please do what you can to find original reporting from the time period to get an original view of how the incident was reported.
As you do this, try to start to build an impression about "What REALLY happened in Waco Texas in the spring of 1993 between the Branch Davidians and the federal government."
We will Talk about this on Monday. Sorry I missed you all today - have a great weekend!
